Golf menthods-traditional VS Modern

Golf menthods-traditional VS Modern

Traditional Golf Methods

There are numerous Traditional ball striking methods.  Simply watch the PGA Tour and you will see hundreds of professional golfers playing the game with many styles and techniques.

Moe Norman and the Graves Golf Academy recognize that playing the game of golf and ball striking are not the same.

Arguably the best player in Canada in his day, with over 17 course records, Moe Norman even said, "I am the best ball striker - not the best player".

Golf is a game where the goal is to hole the golf ball in the fewest strokes possible in the course of 18 holes.  Ball striking is an important part of that goal.

Golf, however, is regarded as one of the most difficult games to learn because ball striking with traditional golf swing methods is difficult.  Everyone should be striving to learn an easier, more simplified way to play golf.

Here is a simple demonstration of why traditional golf swing methods, those being taught today, are biomechanicaly complicated and why Moe Norman single plane mechanics are easier to learn, repeat and ultimately simplify ball striking for everyone.

Traditional Golf - Address to Impact

Traditional golf methods generally all address the ball where the arms hang below the shoulders in a straight down fashion.  This "hanging" of the arms creates what the Graves Golf Academy considers a two plane address position.

Moe Norman Golf Swing Instruction

This two plane (club at address vs. club at impact) relationship is a significant variable as all golfers will impact the golf club with the shaft running directly through mid-back.

The movement from the lower plane (red) to the upper plane (yellow) is significant.  The traditional golfer, in this case David Toms, uses significant rotation of his body as well as an upward movement of the spine.

This mid-back impact plane is exactly where Moe Norman addressed the golf ball thus resulting in a single plane address position.
The Single Plane / Spine Intersect
Moe Norman Single Plane Golf Swing - Mid Spine Intersect

The mid-spine intersect is simply the place where the club shaft and spine will intersect at impact.  This relationship is fundamentally based in biomechanics and directly related to how you hold the golf club in the lead hand.  Other factors that relate to this intersection are:

    * Correct posture / bend from waist

Forward shaft lean

Forward shaft leanDo you want to know the secret to how to compress a golf ball? Hint: Forward shaft lean! To hit it so solid it makes a sound your buddies gasp at? So crisp, you finally take a divot AFTER the ball and not before it? To get your ball to bore through any wind, and still maintain distance and accuracy?

Take a look at Woody Austin. I drew a white line to show you his forward shaft lean at impact. The camera angle isn't the greatest, but notice his hands ahead of the ball.

The biggest issue with most amateurs and beginner golfers is getting the proper impact position. I know I fought it and did it wrong for the first 15 years of my golf career. I always wondered why I hit my irons thin, and weak to the right. Don't get me wrong…weak for my high expectations.

I've got to get you to understand where your hands, shaft and clubhead should be at impact. I can guarantee many of you don't get there, even if you think you do. I was one of those golfers in denial. I hit my irons pretty far, but not solid or compressed. They sounded clunky and thin. Not the kind of sound you'd be proud of, and trust me… I wasn't.

I want to give you a few simple tips (swing thoughts) that helped me finally get the impact I was dreaming of. They may work for you too, but at least you will have some different ideas of how to achieve a compressed, crisply hit iron shot.

Golf Tip #1 Lead with your hands all the way through impact. This may sound extreme, but I can assure you, you will never get the forward shaft lean any other way. You must, must have your hands ahead of the ball with ALL your irons, and even your hybrids.

Golf Tip #2 Pull the butt of the club toward the ball in your downswing. Again, this is similar to golf tip number one, but it specifically refers to the downswing, not necessarily through impact.

Golf Tip #3 Hold your right wrist angle as long as you possibly can. This will give you that forward lean of your shaft. If you release your right wrist angle, you will not only lose that forward lean and get a backwards (flippy) lean of the shaft. The later is much more common with mid to high handicap golfers.

Grip golf clubs with right hand

Grip golf clubs with right handIt seems like every time the proper golf grip is mentioned we always talk about the left hand. We rarely talk about the right hand. I am going to share with you some interesting things about the right hand that will be of value to you the next time you head out to the practice facility to hit some balls.

Learning how to grip a golf club correctly is something you have got to practice to get it right. Lets briefly cover the left hand and then we can move on to the role the right hand plays.

When you pick a golf club up it has to lay diagonally across the base of the left hand from the bottom of the index finger to the pad of the left hand.

Listen carefully, as this is how to hold a golf club. After you wrap your hand around the club you should be able to see anywhere from no knuckles to three knuckles. The more knuckles you see the more the clubface will close in the downswing.

Now lets move on to the right hand. For starters the right hand has to sit under the left hand and both palms must face each other. Let me explain why. When you begin the backswing the right shoulder has to turn out of the way as the golf club swings back. As the golf club swings back on the arc the clubface will role open.

If you start your backswing with the right hand across from or on top of the left hand, the right shoulder will have a tendency to tilt and not turn as the club swings back. If the right shoulder tilts the clubhead will not swing back on an arc, it will swing outside the path and the clubface will not roll open.Grip golf clubs with right hand

Grip golf clubs with right hand

If the right hand is not under the left it will get in the way of the backswing. If the right hand is under the club as the club begins to swing up in the backswing the club will stay on plane as the right wrist begins to fold. When the club begins to swing up if the right hand is on top of the left hand the right elbow will move away from the upper body creating the flying elbow effect.

I have a great drill you can practice at home. Address the golf ball with your right hand on your pant leg and then bring it up and under the shaft. The golf club has to swing around your body in the backswing so make sure you place the right hand is under the left at address.

Do you want to quickly improve your golf swing power

Do you want to quickly improve your golf swing pow

Golf Swing MusclesOne of the fastest ways to improving in golf is by stretching your golf specific muscles. Your golf swing will quickly become more fluid, relaxed and repeatable. If you are a golfer over 50, you MUST implement a golf stretching program if you want to slow down the physical decline of your body.

You may have noticed a decline, and it is affecting your performance. If so, this is only the beginning unless you add stretching to your daily routine.  Also, if you play golf in pain, a golf stretching program will quickly eliminate aches and pain, allowing you to enjoy your golf for years to come.

A good example is making a full shoulder turn in your golf swing. It's not about pounding more balls, or taking more lessons. All it takes is a simple golf stretch for a bigger backswing.

Golf Swing Muscles

If you don't want to do a full blow golf stretching routine, then you've got to at least target a couple of critical areas (golf swing muscles) if you want to stop the rapid declining of your golf swing.

Core Muscles

The core is the engine to your golf swing. If it is weak or tight, you cannot (and will not) produce maximum clubhead speed. The result is being the shortest hitter in your foursome. The core golf muscles used in your golf swing account for 80% or more of your power. The core has one key function in your golf swing…ROTATION!.

The common scenario for the older golfer is a severe restriction in core rotation both back and through. This will greatly diminish clubhead speed, power and ultimately distance. Not being able to make a full shoulder turn on your backswing can also cause an over the top golf swing.

Do you want to quickly improve your golf swing power, and play pain-free golf?
Simple golf stretches for every aspect of your golf swing. Do you tighten up during the round? We've got simple stretches to get you loose and ready to shoot par. Do you have back pain? No problem! We've got lower back stretches to eliminate back pain. Do you want a golf specific warm up to avoid early round blow up holes. We got it right here!

If you want the most golf-specific stretches you can do before, during and after your round to not only help your golf swing consistency, but to prevent an "after round" back pain you may usually incur. We've even got stretches you can do right in your office…without leaving your chair!
