Do golfers need to add a flexibility program to their golf exercise regimen?
Flexibility is a key component to an efficient golf swing. Achieving the proper range of motion of the shoulders, spine, hips, ankles and wrists are fundamental elements of a good golf swing because each swing style requires a vast amount of joint mobility. The majority of swing faults occur due to the lack of flexibility.
This self test is a great way to measure your flexibility to determine if you need to incorporate flexibility into your routine.
1.) Can you stand with your back (includes your glutes, lower and upper back) up against the wall while lifting your arms to 90 degrees with your forearms touching the wall?
2.) Can you stand with your back (includes your glutes, lower and upper back) up against the wall while raising both arms above your head towards the wall, keeping them shoulder distance apart, without arching your lower back?
3.) Place one hand behind you with your fingers pointing to the ceiling. Reach as high between your shoulder blades as you can. Place the other hand over your shoulder. Can you touch both hands together?
4.) Hold a club or stick behind your back with both hands at glute level, hinge from the hips until chest is parallel to the floor. Can you raise your arms perpendicular to the floor while still holding the club or stick?
5.) Can you lift one knee to a 90 degree angle without changing your spine? Make sure to do each leg.
6.) Lay on your stomach. Bend your knee bringing your heels toward your glutes. Can you grab your ankle or foot with the same hand? Make sure to do each leg.
7.) While standing with your feet together, can you hinge forward from the hips and touch your toes while keeping your knees straight?
8.) Can you squat with your arms straight above your head, while keeping your heels on the floor and bringing your thighs past parallel to the floor?
If your answer is “NO” to any of these questions, it is highly recommended that you work on your flexibility.
In some cases, certain injuries, imbalances, instabilities, and lack of strength may effect the test results. A thorough assessment by your BodyBusiness Certified Golf Fitness Trainer is highly recommended to help determine what may be preventing you from answering “YES” to all the questions, along with any other improvements should be made.
